What Is The Church Of God?

The Church of God (Anderson, Indiana) is a global movement of people seeking to fulfill God’s mission in the world. We consider ourselves a movement, rather than a denomination. The movement began in the 1880’s in the midst of the broader American Holiness Revival with the goal of restoring unity during a time when there were increasing divisions within the church.

The name “Church of God” is based on several verses in the Bible where the Apostle Paul, one of the New Testament writers, used that term to describe the body of Christ (1 Corinthians 1:2, 2 Corinthians 1:2, and Galatians 1:13 are a few).  Several denominations have “Church of God” in their name, so we distinguish ourselves by saying that we’re the Church of God with headquarters in Anderson, Indiana.

While we have no formal statement of our beliefs, we do share an unwavering conviction that Jesus Christ is Lord and at the center of everything. We also place a strong emphasis on holiness and unity. We believe that the people of God are called to be in a process of becoming more and more holy, or set apart, through the transformative work of the Holy Spirit. And we believe that the church, in all of its rich diversity of cultures, gifts, and personalities, is to be wholeheartedly unified as we live out God’s mission in the world.
